Prom season is just around the corner! It is undoubtedly one of the highlights of high school life, and for those of us who have already gone through it and now have our own kids to send to their own promenade, it’s now time to sit back and enjoy watching our kids get all excited about going to the prom night. Sharing this feeling of excitement is great, as helping your child prepare for this important social gathering would be a great time for bonding. So of course, it follows that you have to know a bit about current trends when it comes to prom dresses, unless you want your child looking at you like you just came out of a cave when you picked for her that antiquated gown that was “so last year”.
What’s good about picking what to wear for prom these days is that there are no rigid fashion restrictions anymore. Short prom dresses that used to raise a lot of eyebrows are in style now (and have been for some time), and where high heels once was, in its place are ballet shoes. Yes, flats. So you might want to take that into consideration when you and your daughter go hunting for that perfect prom dress. Where an LBD used to be a classic choice, now the little gold dress is all the rage. Short dresses now come off as innocent and sweet, while long gowns speak of maturity. Prints are also promising to be a big hit among girls for prom night. Of course, being fashionable does not mean that your daughter have to be in trendy clothes even if it doesn’t suit her personality. Bend the rules a little to let her personality shine through her dress.
And then there’s hair, makeup, jewelry and accessories. Bold lipstick is what’s hot this 2010, updos are still trendy hairstyles as well as big braids and messy, wavy buns. Jewelry and accessories need to go with the look set by the dress, as the latter is the central point from which one bases the other decisions on. Needless to say, it isn’t the price of the overall look that’s important. It doesn’t matter whether your daughter chooses from Tony Bowls prom dresses or the cheaper line of dresses available. The bottom line here is that you both had a great time together choosing what would look good on her, getting in touch with your young self while reaching out to your child at the same time.
