When you have a full life already – spouse, kids, pets, job, etc. – so it can be hard to think about adding anything to it. Then, you find out that you have to move. Whether it’s because of a job, family, a financial situation or something else, moving can be really hard on your mind and body. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can take a lot of the stress off yourself by doing a few simple things.
First, talk to movers, and find someone who can do the job right for a reasonable price. If you know you don’t have to do all the work, you’ll feel a lot better.
Second, clean out your closets, kitchen cabinets and drawers. Have a big yard sale, or donate to charity. Get rid of all the things you don’t actually need, don’t want and don’t use anymore. Someone else can get great use out of the things that you really don’t want to keep around. One man’s trash really is another man’s treasure, so you can make some money just for getting rid of things that don’t have value to you anymore. If you donate items, be sure to take a tax write-off for them.
Start planning early, too. Usually, you know in advance that you’re going to be moving. You have time to think about it, get rid of items you don’t need, and pack up some things that you don’t use very often but that you want to keep. Even a few boxes packed up will give you a sense of accomplishment, and the movers will just be able to come get them and put them on the truck with no trouble at all. You can usually get friends and relatively to help you, too, so don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
