My mom works for a local government unit (LGU) in Bulacan, and has been with the same employer for more than 15 years now. Me and my sisters have been bugging her to retire already and just work online like we do, if she doesn’t want to be idle. I even bought her her own domain, and designed it to jump start her online career. However, over her years of working for the LGU, she has become attached to it, and is now refusing to retire until she is required to.
To add to that, she has been voted as the president of a rather important employees’ organization earlier this month. Which means more responsibility for her (and unbelievably, no salary raise or even extra benefits) and less time for us. I’m a bit sad of course, seeing how less of her we’ll be seeing from hereon, but proud of her, too. At a time when we expected her to wind down, here she is achieving more for herself.
I know one day she will eventually let go of her job and let us take care of her. Most Filipinos like us, when our parents grow old, we take care of them personally. It’s part of our culture, us choosing to let our old stay at home with us so we can look after them ourselves.
With how our mom cared for us on her own during our growing up years, I wouldn’t dream of any other set-up.

Guess, he’s contented and happy seeing you guys living securely, though. Capable and able, that’s the reason why she focused her time and dedicate herself to this job after all these years.
