7 Rules to Prevent Back to School Jitters

1) Make sure they are getting enough rest.

During the summer, you probably haven’t paid strict attention to things like bed time but it is vital that children have enough sleep to be able to concentrate and fully participate at school. The best way to prepare them for their new schedule is to get them adjusted to it as soon as possible. Before summer ends start enforcing the school bed time and waking them up every morning at the same time that they will have to get up for school.

2) Practice the daily routine.

Children feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. If your child will be walking to school, practice walking the route with them before the first day of school. If you are dropping your child off and picking them up, take them by the school and show them exactly where you will be waiting for them in the afternoon. This way they won’t have any anxiety about whether or not they have missed you or been left behind.

3) Get them excited about the new subjects they will be learning.

Look over the class syllabus and let them know about all the new things they’ll be learning in math, science, and English. Tell them how much you had learning your multiplication tables and reading new books. Make education seem fun and exciting and your child will look forward to learning and going to school.

4) Make sure they know how to reach you.

If you’ll be at work while they are at school make sure they know your work phone number and the name of the company. If you’ll be at home while they are in class, make sure they know your home telephone number, cell phone number, and your address. Also, make sure they know how to contact at least one other adult in case you miss the phone call.

5) Develop a plan to deal with conflict.

Unfortunately, the playground still has bullies. Let your child know that they might not get along with all the children but they should try to compromise and talk things out. If they feel threatened by another child, let them know that it’s okay to ask an adult, like their teacher, to intervene.

6) Make sure they have all the necessary supplies.

With your hectic schedule, it may be easy to forget things but feeling unprepared will only add to your child’s anxiety. Download the school supply list from the internet and then pack everything your child needs into his/her backpack. Be sure to let them help so that they know where all of their supplies are located.

7) Assure them of your love.

We know that children have to make mistakes to lean and grow but they truly fear disappointing us. Of course you want them to do their best and achieve all that they can but let them know that no matter what happens you love and support them and will always be there to help.
